Avowed’s combat looks like a blast, and I cannot wait to get my hands on it. Mastering the first-person combat will take time, but I’ve broken down what you’re able to expect from Avowed’s combat below.

How does combat work in Avowed?

Avowedis an action RPG, and its combat plays out infirst-person. While most games have you choose a role between mage, archer, warrior, and more, Avowed does away with this system. Instead, itprioritizes player creativity and freedom, allowing you to have several loadouts and switch between them at will.

Sword and Melee Combat

Swords, shields, and other melee weapons are classics in fantasy-action RPGs. Avowed has powerfulone-handed and two-handed weapons, with one-handed weapons able to combine with other one-handed weapons and shields. Melee weapons can be used quickly or charged up for a power attack.

Wand Combat

Wands are powerfulmagical weaponsin Avowed, capable of being used single handed or combined with shields and other weapons. Using a wand one-handed creates fast and snappy combat, while using it in addition to another weapon slows it down. Wands have varied effects, some of which can be charged for more powerful attacks.

Gun and Bow Combat

Fans of the Pillar of Eternity series won’t be surprised by the inclusion of guns in Avowed. Being asharpshooterrequires patience and skill to ensure you land your shots. Fortunately, you may wield a pistol and sword to take down foes who dodge your shots or forego this to dual-wield pistols and become a gunslinger.

Bows are also present in Avowed and provide astealthy, long-range option for taking down enemies. Pistols may be flashy and good at mid-range, but I’ve always been a sucker for a bow. My first character in Oblivion was a master archer, and I also look forward to playing as one in Avowed.

Magic Combat

Magic is a crucial element in Avowed, and not limited to wands. Casting spells allow you to defeat foes, trap them with an Entangle spell, or freeze them in ice. Combine spells with your other weapons for devastating combos, like smashing a frozen enemy with your sword. Mastering Avowed’s magic requires knowing when to use spells and what enemies to target, but it adds adeep layer of creativityto how you engage in battles.

Shields

Shields are the perfect gear piece fordefensiveplayers in Avowed. Hide behind a shield to reduce incoming damage, or perform a well-time parry to deflect enemy attacks. Regardless of how you play and what weapon you use, I recommend keeping a shield on hand for when you take on powerful enemies.

Avowed Enemies

Enemy varietyrequires you to change your attack approach in Avowed. Some enemies wield shields and fight defensively, while others are brutally strong with powerful attacks. Other enemies provide support and healing, meaning you must prioritize taking them down to defeat the other enemies.

Avowed’s fluid weapon system fits in perfectly with the different enemies and strategies required to defeat them. You may find yourself casting spells to defeat or trap a powerful foe while you take out the weaker ones with your weapons. Balancing pressure and manageability is a key part of Avowed’s combat.
