Solving puzzles is essential to progress through the story of this game, but some will be more complicated than others. Here’s how to solve the boiler puzzle in Alone in the Dark so you can unravel the mysteries of Decerto.

In order to repair the decorative plate on the boiler in Alone in the Dark, you will first have to find its missing pieces. This will take you a while. One is right behind the boiler past the leak, while the other is in Casandra’s room. However, you will need to go through several steps before you can reach either of them.

Once you complete the dream sequence, where you will get Batiste’s keys and the first Talisman puzzle, you will finally be able to work on the boiler decorative plate. Once the cutscene ends with Dr. Gray, you will be back in the basement. The paper next to the boiler will tell you that the valve you need to stop the leak is in the wine cellar. However, the cellar door is locked, and Batiste’s keys can’t open it. We need to find another key.
Where to find the Wine Cellar Key in Alone in the Dark
If you want to fix the valve in the boiler room, you will first need to find the wine cellar key in Alone in the Dark.This key is located in the Drawing room on the first floor. First, go outside to find the well plate for theAstronomical clockand fix the ladder that leads to the Plaza, creating a shortcut.
Once you complete theAstronomical clock puzzle, go to the hallway in front of Jeremy’s room, and you’ll enter another dream sequence. Inside the bag that you get from the dream, you will find aPalette knife, which you may now use to open wedged doors. Go to the Drawing room door and remove the wedge with the knife.
Here, you will findthe cellar key in an ashtray. With the key, you can head down to the basement, unlock the gate, and enter the wine cellar. To get to the valve, you will need to turn off the electricity. Grab theswitch from the shelf to the rightand head to the circuit box in the back. You can nowgrab the valve and get to the boiler room. Once you fix the leak, you will find thebroken platein the rooms past the boiler.
How to get the Cassandra room broken plate in Alone in the Dark
Before you may get the Cassandra room broken plate in Alone in the Dark, you need to do a few things. First, go to the second floor and open thewedged door right next to the servants' stairs. Once you are in the new hallway, you canopen the Mezzanine doors.
This is useful since you can finally access the grand parlor through the stairwell and get theMedicine Box key. Make sure also to open the door at the end of the hallway so that you can move through the house easily.
Once the cutscene ends, you will find thekey on the piano in the parlor. Head into the dining room, where you can unlock the bolted door to the servant’s stairs. The locked medicine box is inLottie’s room. Go there to get theDr. Jenkins Lozenges medicine bottle.
You should now go to Cassandra’s room. Climb to the second floor andgo through the Sitting room, which you can now unlock. There will beanother bottle, Margrave Liniment, on the deskfor you to pick up and two puzzles in the room to solve. First, head to the bottles behind the desk. You will need toarrange them in the patternfrom the image below by changing their places and rotating them around.

As you can see, thebottles' numbers are two, five, and seven. Don’t be fooled by the third bottle; that isn’t a number on the label (I was fooled by this). Go to the padlock on the cupboard that has zodiac symbols on it. CheckPelosi’s journalfor the right zodiac symbols:Pisces, Gemini, and Leo. When you unlock it, you will get one broken plate for the boiler.
Once you have both plates in place, you may fix the boiler room. There are four corner pieces on which you can base the picture. You can alsolook at Jeremy’s diary for the picture, which I didn’t do until I actually finished the puzzle. After you have fixed the plate, check the numbers on the boiler so you can adjust the talisman. In this case,the numbers are 9, 7, 5.
When the talisman puzzle is complete, you will open a new dream sequence passage, which will allow you to keep progressing in the game.
